The Ardeo Quartet was formed in 2001 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. In September 2004, it won three prizes at the Shostakovich International String Quartet Competition in Moscow, followed by prizes at the FNAPEC competition (Paris, May 2005); two prizes at the International String Quartet Competition in Bordeaux (June 2005); at the International Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne (July 2007); and at the Premio Paolo Borciani in Reggio Emilia (June 2008).

It has benefited from the teaching of Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia de Madrid during the academic year 2004/2005 thanks to a bursary from the Sacyr company, and then at the Instituto de Musica de Camera de Madrid in 2006/2007.

In March 2007, the Quartet released its first commercial CD, of the first two quartets by Charles Koechlin. Chosen by Cultures France to benefit from the DECLIC program, in collaboration with Radio France and Mécénat Musical Société Générale (MMSG), the Ardeo Quartet has also benefited from the support of the MMSG since 2005.
Joëlle Martinez plays a Charles Jacquot cello (1846) on loan from the Zilber Foundation
